The Chandiramani Family
Enterprise, Migration, and Community in Grenada
The story of the Chandiramani family reflects the journey of the contemporary Indian diaspora in Grenada, where enterprise, family, and community are closely intertwined.
Mr. Prem Chandiramani, born in 1940 in what is now Pakistan, later moved to India, where he met and married Mrs. Geeta Chandiramani in Bangalore in 1966. In 1973, the couple made the decision to migrate to Grenada, a step that would shape not only their future, but also the lives of many others.
In his early years in Grenada, Mr. Chandiramani worked with the Kirpalani Group, gaining valuable experience in commerce. In 1975, he, together with Mrs. Chandiramani, established Grand Bazaar. This was a true partnership. While he brought commercial experience, she played an equally critical role in building and sustaining the enterprise through discipline, consistency, and shared vision.
Over time, their ventures expanded into real estate and retail, including the establishment of Shipwreck, a well-known souvenir and gift shop in St. George’s. Their businesses became part of the fabric of Grenadian commerce and continue to make a lasting impact on the island’s retail and real estate landscape.
Beyond business, the Chandiramani family became a point of support and connection for many within the Indian community. Mrs. Chandiramani, in particular, played a central role in this regard. Through quiet acts of service, guidance, and personal support, she helped many individuals and families navigate life in a new country. The family created pathways for others to settle and establish themselves, offering opportunity, stability, and a sense of belonging.
Together, Mr. and Mrs. Chandiramani contributed to the growth and continuity of the contemporary Indian diaspora in Grenada, not only through enterprise, but through the relationships they built and the people they supported.
Family remains at the centre of this legacy. Following Mr. Chandiramani’s passing in 2021, Mrs. Chandiramani and their children continue to lead and manage the businesses, carrying forward the values, work ethic, and vision established over decades.
Their story is one of partnership, resilience, and service, and forms an important part of Grenada’s ongoing narrative of migration, enterprise, and identity.
